DH Architecture + Design developed proposals for the sensitive redevelopment of a mixed-use property in the Suffolk village of Darsham. The scheme provides nine self-contained accommodation rooms, each featuring a private kitchenette and en-suite bathroom, designed primarily to meet the growing demand for high-quality accommodation associated with the Sizewell C project.

The original village dwelling is retained and carefully refurbished, preserving its established character and contribution to the street scene. A structurally compromised former workshop is replaced with a new two-storey element that reflects the proportions, materials and traditional detailing of the existing property. The historic single-storey link between the buildings is also retained, helping the completed development read as a coherent evolution of the site.

Internally, the accommodation has been designed to maximise natural light, privacy and ease of use. Ground-floor rooms benefit from private rear courtyards, while rooms at first-floor level incorporate Juliet balconies. Dedicated stair cores create manageable clusters of accommodation and support clear circulation, sound separation and fire safety.

Traditional brickwork, pitched tiled roofs and carefully proportioned casement windows allow the new and existing elements to sit comfortably within the village setting. The wider site design provides ten parking spaces, secure covered cycle storage and a comprehensive landscaping scheme incorporating native hedgerows, new trees and soft planting.

Located close to Darsham railway station, local bus services and the Sizewell C Northern Park and Ride, the proposal transforms a deteriorating mixed-use property into attractive, sustainable and thoughtfully designed accommodation while respecting the scale and character of its surroundings.
